BMI is calculated by using your height and weight to determine your overall body composition.
To be considered as a surgical candidate:
You must have tried to lose weight previously using supervised and unsupervised dietary programs.
• If you have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30-34
If your BMI falls into this category, you can elect to make an evaluation appointment. During your first visit, your surgeon will review your case to determine if you qualify for surgery.
• You have a BMI between 35 and 40
If your BMI falls into this category and you have existing health problems or co-morbid factors such as high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, asthma, sleep apnea or joint pain, you may be considered a surgical candidate.
• You have a BMI of 40 or above
If your BMI falls into this category, your health condition is considered morbidly obese and surgery is most likely the only way you will become more healthy.
